Research centres and groups

Our three broad research centres bring together expertise across the School to work on significant projects.

Each centre is responsible for addressing key research themes across Earth and ocean sciences.

Centre for Solid Earth and Natural Resources

Our research deals with the composition and dynamic evolution of the Earth's mantle and crust, including its mineral and petroleum resources.

Economic geology

Economic Geology

We apply fundamental geological knowledge and research to help tackle major problems in the exploration and development of mineral and hydrocarbon resources.

A disused quarry

Sustainable Geoenvironments

Our group conducts applied research into the interactions between the geosphere and human and environmental well-being.

Tectonics and Geophysics

We investigate the physical processes of the solid Earth.

Centre for Geobiology and Geochemistry

Our research focuses on the Earth's surface, including in and under its oceans, where life has evolved and profoundly affected environments over billions of years.

We examine the tracing of Earth system processes at both low and high temperature using geochemical methods.

Water sampling in the high Arctic

Geomicrobiology and Biogeochemistry

Our group use a range of complimentary approaches across spatial and temporal scales to investigate research questions.

Reconstruction of Devonian lycopod forest in Svalbard

We study the structure, morphology, growth and systematics of organisms and their interactions with each other and with the lithosphere, oceans and atmosphere.

Centre for Resilience and Environmental Change

We investigate the causes and consequences of changes in the Earth system, in the ocean, atmosphere and on land, from the geological past into the present and future.

Icebergs in South Greenland.

Cold Climates

We are interested in how life exists in extreme environments and how processes in the coldest places influence the workings of the whole Earth.

Hydrological engineering in Switzerland

Earth Surface Processes

Our multidisciplinary research group attempts to understand a future world with a warmer climate and different land uses.

Ocean and Climate Systems

The Ocean and Climate Research Group (OCS RG) works on a variety of processes and timescales within the ocean-climate system.
