Damian Radcliffe is a journalist and researcher specialising in hyperlocal and community journalism as well as wider trends in social media and technology.

He writes regularly about these issues, for major media outlets includingThe Huffington Post, CBS Interactive(ZDNet) and the BBC, whilst his research presentations have enjoyed over 350,000+ views on LinkedIn’s SlideShare platform. One of the Top 150 most visited websites in the world; Damian’s slides were in their Top 1% of most viewed content globally in 2013 and 2014. 

Damian’s expertise in hyperlocal media and community journalism is manifest in a wide variety of publications, including the first review of the UK's hyperlocal sector; “Here and Now: hyperlocal in the UK” – which launched NESTA’s Destination Local programme, and regular contributions for the BBC College of Journalism, Journalism.co.uk and the Hyperlocal Voices series for the Online Journalism Blog.

In August 2012, Roy Greenslade on the Guardian website, provided a summary of his essay on hyperlocal media and regulation, which was submitted to the Leveson Inquiry and republished by both the MeejaLaw website and the Journalism Foundation.

Other outputs in this space include acting as an advisor to DCMS for a Ministerial seminar with hyperlocal news experts from US and the UK, as well as membership of  the Steering Committee for a project on London’s Digital Neighbourhoods, produced by Networked Neighbourhoods, for which he also contributed a guest paper.

More widely, Damian has two decades experience leading new and creative and research initiatives across radio, TV and online, in the public, commercial, non-profit and regulatory sectors.

A life-long digital pioneer, Damian’s work includes launching the BBC's first TV app, leading a multi-award winning partnership between a UK NGO and the BBC's local media services, as well as undertaking a variety of policy roles at the UK communications regulator Ofcom.

Between 2012-14 he led and established the Rassed research programme at Qatar’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, exploring the impact of ICT on Society and the potential afforded by digital technologies. During this time his team published 100+ articles, studies, presentations and infographics in both English and Arabic; and their work featured across national, regional and international media.

Damian was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2008 and in 2012 he was made an Honorary Research Fellow at Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.
