Recently, detection of nanoparticles using optical microscopy has become quantitative [10.1021/acsphotonics.9b00727, 10.1039/d0na00059k] and extremely sensitive [10.1103/PhysRevApplied.9.034006, 10.1126/science.aar5839]. This opens the possibility to characterize nanoparticles in detail without the use of electron microscopy techniques, doing away with the high costs and invasive sample preparation. Applications are for example water pollution, virus detection, nanoparticle characterization in pharmacy, biomedicine, and a range of industries using nanoparticles.

Nanoparticle characterization combining optical microscopy, image analysis, and simulation.

In this project I will further develop optical microscopy techniques, data analysis, and nanoparticle optical response simulations, to measure nanoparticles in solution and attaching to surfaces. I will work with widefield techniques such a brightfield, darkfield, phase contrast, and differential interference contrast, as well as off-axis holography. I will analyse the resulting images using matlab based image analysis methods and simulate the nanoparticle optical response using COMSOL based finite element simulations.
