Did you know we are a Fairtrade university?
From your morning cup of tea to your lunch-time banana

At CUFoods, we’re committed to ethically sourcing our products. This means that all of the tea, coffee, hot chocolate and even bananas served at Cardiff University are Fairtrade certified.
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is more than just a label - it’s a global movement that champions fair wages, better working conditions and sustainable practices for producers in developing countries.
By adhering to rigorous certification processes, such as Fairtrade certification and the World Fair Trade Organisation verification system, Fairtrade ensures ethical practices across supply chains.
Why does it matter?
Producers in tea, coffee, cocoa and other industries often face extreme poverty and harsh working conditions. Fairtrade helps change that by promoting a trading system that’s fair, sustainable and puts people and the planet first.
Fun facts about Fairtrade tea 🫖
Did you know?
- Around 70,000 cups of tea are drunk every second worldwide
- The UK is the largest market for Fairtrade tea – and growing!
- Kenya is the largest producer of Fairtrade tea
- Globally, there are over 113,000 hectares of Fairtrade tea farms under cultivation (that’s equivalent to over 80,000 football pitches)
- Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world, surpassed only by water
Many tea-growing communities live in extreme poverty, but Fairtrade empowers farmers with a more sustainable livelihood.
This is why we are proud to actively support Fairtrade principles, integrating them into our cafés, restaurants and hospitality services. Every cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and banana you enjoy on campus is a direct contribution to fairer wages and improved working conditions for farmers. Beyond beverages, we also source Fairtrade sugar, chocolate (shoutout to Tony’s Chocolonely fans!), and even wine, making it easy for everyone to choose ethically.

Help us help others in need by choosing Fairtrade on campus today.
