Promoting diversity and understanding of immigration through opera

Working towards positive attitudes to diversity through music.

Premiered online as a film in March 2021, Bhekizizwe is a one-man opera by Mkhululi Mabija and Robert Fokkens about a young South African Zulu man called Bhekizizwe. In November 2022, Opera’r Ddraig will tour a live production of the piece alongside screenings of the film around Wales.

This Innovation for All project funds a programme of creative digital music workshops with local schools and youth groups, installations, and facilitated conversations with local communities, in collaboration with tour venues. These will all be supported by a newly-created online material about the performances and events, as well as presenting core themes around immigration and racism.

Designed with support from Race Council Cymru and partners, these materials invite and support creative and personal responses from audiences and participants to these issues, which will form part of an online archive.
