Conflict, Development and Disaster

A research seminar organised by the Conflict, Development and Disaster as part of the School of Modern Languages’ Research Seminar Series with guest speaker Dr Saima Nasar (University of Bristol).

Abstract

The paper will explore the transnational trajectories of Britain"s East African Asian population. Following forced migration from the new nation states of East Africa in the 1960s and 1970s, the paper traces the discursive construction of colonial subjects, imperial citizens, and postcolonial refugees.

Biography

Dr Saima Nasar (University of Bristol) is a social and cultural historian who works on race, empire and Britain’s diasporic communities.  She is a social and cultural historian who works on race, empire and Britain’s diasporic communities. Committed to multi-archival and interdisciplinary research, her previous and future work contributes to developing comparative and interdisciplinary approaches in the fields of Modern British History, Migration Studies, and Imperial History.  Her first book will examine the transnational trajectories of Britain’s East African Asian population.  Her future research focuses on welfare imperialism.  She is reviews editor of ‘Immigrants and Minorities: Historical Studies in Ethnicity, Migration and Diaspora’.

Dr Nasar teaches across our undergraduate and postgraduate taught programs. Her past and current teaching has included African history, the making of the contemporary world, inter-war British history, making multiculturalism in Britain, research methods and African American history.  I also supervise a range of dissertation projects.
