The main focus of the presentation will be on the challenges and opportunities for the electricity sector created by the Government"s ambition to ban petrol and diesel cars by 2040. Electricity is seen as an alternative fuel that is available at a large scale and that will serve all cars with a smart management.

There are many challenges facing electric vehicles uptake, but the opportunities for the electric vehicle integration in Smart Grids are greater than the challenges the electricity system faces. For example, smart charging can be used for peak shaving or demand side response supporting grid flexibility and encourage customers to get engaged with their electricity usage. But in order these solutions to be accepted by the general public should be cost effective, have limiting impact of the day-to-day usability of the vehicle and simple to use for encouraging customers to get engaged with their electricity usage.

Support and engagement is needed to enable consumers to benefit from providing their EV as an energy asset. Finally, all the challenges could be translated in opportunities for innovation and position UK as a leader not only for the EVs adoption but for the technological advance.
