Dr Maria Fragoulaki is Lecturer in Ancient Greek History at Cardiff University, in the Cardiff School of History, Archaeology and Religion. Her work focuses on ideas of interstate kinship and cultural politics and on the political and social history of Ancient Greece. She specialises in Thucydides, a major Greek historian and pioneering political thinker of the fifth century BCE. Her paper examines the theme of democracy, exploring ideas of leadership, populism and participation and the comparisons and contrasts that can be seen between the ancient world and the politics of today.
