German Cinema Series 2017-18: Victoria

A film screening of Herr Lehmann (Berlin Blues), as part of the German Cinema Series.

Synopsis:
In October 1989, part of the West Berlin borough of Kreuzberg called SO 36, had been largely shut off by the Wall from the rest of the city for 28 years. A lethargic sub-culture of students, artists, bohemians and barflys had flourished. Amongst them is barkeeper Frank who has a complete disregard for anything beyond SO 36. His lifestyle is gradually disturbed when his parents show up for a visit – things go awry with his girlfriend Katrin and his best friend Karl starts to act strangely. Meanwhile, political turmoil mounts on the other side of the Wall.

This film has English subtitles (Germany, 2003, 109 minutes).

Especially recommended for staff and students interested in the fall of the Berlin wall from a Western point of view.
