FRAM - Functional Resonance Analysis Method

The objective of the course is to introduce the Functional Resonance Analysis Method, which serves to model how complex socio-technical systems function. A FRAM model can be the basis for accident investigation, performance improvement, safety management and system design. Basic knowledge of Safety Management and human factors and/or resiliance engineering will be an advantage. Practical experience with event analysis or safety management is not a requirement, but may be useful.

The course will include an introduction to Safety I and Safety II, FRAM and FRAM model visualiser (FMV), together with practice in how to use the method and the FMV. Day 2 will begin to build a FRAM model for self-provided examples, demonstrate how to complete the model, and how to plan a FRAM analysis and use the resulting model. Both days will include group exercises and discussion.

The course will be delivered by Professor Erik Hollnagel, a professor and industrial chair at MINES ParisTech (France) and visiting professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. Professor Hollnagel has extensive experience in universities, research centres and industries in several countries, and his expertise covers several domains such as nuclear power generation, aerospace and aviation, software engineering, healthcare, and land-based traffic. His professional interests include industrial safety, resilience engineering, accident investigation cognitive systems engineering and cognitive ergonomics. His publications run to 17 books, including 3 on resilience engineering. His latest title from Ashgate is "The ETTO Principle - Why things that go right sometimes go wrong".
