The School of Modern Languages is hosting the first seminar on Applied Linguistics and Language Pedagogy. The seminar will welcome a distinguished guest speaker from the areas of Applied Linguistics and Language Pedagogy. This will be followed by a wine reception in the School foyer between 17:10 – 18:30.

Invited speaker

Dr Yuichi Suzuki (Associate Professor at Kanagawa University). The title of his seminar is Measuring explicit and implicit knowledge: Foundations for second language teaching and learning.

Abstract

Explicit and implicit teaching, learning and knowledge are theoretical foundations for second language teachers and researchers. In this talk, Dr Yuichi Suzuki will present an overview of the validity of evidence for the measurements of explicit and implicit knowledge in second language grammar. A theoretical distinction between automatized explicit knowledge and implicit knowledge is proposed from his recent validation studies on implicit knowledge measures utilizing reaction time and eye-tracking techniques (Suzuki, 2017, Suzuki and DeKeyser, 2015, Vafaee, Suzuki, Kachinske, 2017). Dr Suzuki will then present evidence for the strong interface of explicit and implicit knowledge, as well as for the important roles of cognitive aptitudes (Suzuki and DeKeyser, 2017). To conclude, he will discuss the implications for instructed SLA research and classroom teaching and learning, in light of better understanding of explicit and implicit learning and knowledge in adult SLA.
