Can We Really Plan Nationally for Music Education?

The refreshed National Plan for Music Education in England was published in June 2022. Subtitled ‘The Power of Music’, the plan reaffirmed a commitment to music education in England. The refreshed plan coincided with other national initiatives in Scotland and Wales that have sought to amplify and support music education in schools. However, there are competing educational agendas that hinder the promise of national plans for music education.

This lecture will explore some of the competing themes, the current situation in music education and the possible routes through to realising the ‘power of music’ in our schools.
