The 13th event in the Cardiff-Japanese Lecture Series features Dōgen, a Japan-based YouTuber known for comedy sketches and Japanese language education. The Cardiff-Japanese Lecture Series explores sociocultural aspects of Japanese language learning. The event is funded by the Japan Foundation, London. Recordings of the Cardiff-Japanese Lecture Series are available to watch on our YouTube channel.

About the series

Students of Japanese as a Foreign Language have fewer opportunities to grasp relevant contemporary information or understand cultural contexts because they study outside Japan. Furthermore, recognising Japanese society in a broader sense and considering how their own Japanese language ability may be applied to their own futures are challenges for such learners. It is therefore essential not only to learn the target language but also to know the multifaceted aspects of the country. Moreover, teachers involved in Japanese language education outside Japan need support in obtaining and sharing up-to-date information reflecting many of the current trends and norms in contemporary Japanese society, in order to provide a more authentic learning experience.

The Cardiff-Japanese Lecture Series aims to explore and understand sociocultural aspects of language learning for those studying Japanese language and culture at Cardiff University, as well as various learners, teachers and researchers with an interest in Japan.

Abstract

In this lecture Dōgen talks about motivation to study Japanese, how he learned Japanese, and gives advice on effective Japanese language learning. He also talks about his mastery of the Japanese language has opened up opportunities in his life and career.

The webinar will include a Q&A session with Dōgen. If you have any questions for Dōgen about learning Japanese, please submit them via the registration form.

Biography

Standing at the crossroads of comedy and Japanese phonetics, Dōgen is known for his humorous YouTube sketches tackling Japanese culture and life in Japan as well as for his proficiency with the Japanese language.

Originally from the United States, he graduated with a degree in Japanese linguistics after studying abroad for a year in Tokyo. Following graduation, he returned to Japan in 2009 as a JET Program participant, with a placement in Oita Prefecture that eventually led to him working in administration at a university in Oita.

He began to create content for YouTube in 2016, starting what has become a channel with more than 69 million views and more than 560 thousand subscribers around the world.
