This seminar will introduce the Welsh part of the Tweetolectology (Trydarieitheg) project, a project to map grammatical variation in a number of languages using social-media (Twitter) data. It will set out how the Welsh corpus of some 18m words was gathered and converted into maps, looking at a range of examples that illustrate both change in progress and the possible emergence of new patterns of variation. The social-media data on the one hand replicate the findings of existing dialect studies such as the Survey of Welsh Dialects, but also offer a window onto more recent changes, some of which are due on ongoing language revitalisation and standardisation of the spoken language.
