We are excited to welcome Dr Andrew Buck (Cardiff University) to speak on the theme: ‘Crusades and Historical Writing in the Latin East: Remembering the First Crusade in Late-Twelfth-Century Jerusalem’.

Towards the end of the twelfth century, an anonymous Jerusalemite author penned a short history of the kings of Jerusalem that served as a call to action for the forces of the Latin West following the loss of the Holy City to the Sultan Saladin in 1187. In doing so, the author took as their model the First Crusade leader, Godfrey of Bouillon, and his fellow crusaders.

This paper examines the extent to which this evocation of the crusade is representative of wider processes of memorialisation and identity construction on the Latin East and thus looks to examine the 'crusading' nature of the Frankish settlement of the Near East.
