Launching our edited collection: "Unfamiliar Landscapes: Young People and Diverse Outdoor Experiences", the authors will present the themes of the book, with contributions from practice and research.

Following the launch will be breakout group discussions on children, young people and diversity in the outdoors, exploring the future of practice, research and debates in childhood and youth studies, nature and the outdoors, and educational practices in these settings.

There will be copies of the book as raffle prizes, and networking time with drinks and nibbles.

The book

Drawing on several years of research by Smith, Pitt and Dunkley, amongst a range of other authors in this edited collection (25 authors), and evidence from practice (‘conversations with practitioners’ chapters with 4 outdoor practitioners), Unfamiliar Landscapes has potential for considerable impact across practice, policy and research. The book speaks to how outdoor learning and activities, both now and in the past, can be embedded in exclusionary cultures. Through discussing diversity in terms of race, gender, and age-differences, it examines how landscapes can be made and positioned as unfamiliar to young people, whilst also uncovering some of the processes by which young people are made unfamiliar in landscapes (i.e. through bodily, gendered, or cultural differences).
