Our February Piano Series is opened by Welsh pianist Rachel Starritt, who will perform a mixture of Classical and Jazz repertoire, including improvisations in both genres.
Throughout the programme we encounter song, dance, poetic narrative and improvisatory character connecting the works. Each piece can encourage listeners to imagine or consider scenes, images, specific ideas or moods. For instance, Rachel feels that the Bach-Busoni's Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ offers a prayer 'Asking the Lord for comfort'.
Debussy's tone poem Nocturne, originally composed for string orchestra, and the second poem by Scriabin both exhibit orchestral palettes on the piano. The titular Villa-Lobos 'simple poem' adds a strong element of jazz in rhythm and harmony, giving a foretaste of the second half of the concert.
