The role of the immune system in dementia

More than 850,000 people in the UK have dementia, with one in 14 people over the age of 65 affected by the condition. With an ageing population and the number of people living with dementia increasing, the need for research to understand the causes and identify effective therapies, is greater than ever.

One significant area of research is neuroinflammation - inflammation in the brain. Join Dr Mat Clement (PhD 2013) and Dr Wiola Zelek (PhD 2020), Research Fellows from the School of Medicine, as they present their research on understanding the role of infectious viruses and the immune system in developing dementia. Hear how their work is searching for new therapies that can reduce inflammation in the brain and helping to find ways to transport these medicines across the blood brain barrier.
