Despite the well-documented problems that learners of Welsh as a second language experience with stress and intonation, the attention intonational aspects of their learning have received is confined to calls for more research and pedagogical focus on this area. Stress and intonation are neglected in part due to a commonplace, and entirely untested belief, that learners from Wales can transfer Welsh-style stress and intonation in their English to their efforts to learn Welsh. This presentation presents empirical findings from the first phonetic investigation of stress and intonation in adult learners of Welsh. I look at the existence and scope of any "native advantage" by drawing on acoustic analysis.

This seminar will be delivered over Zoom in Welsh with simultaneous English translation available.
