Abstract

The current global environmental crisis, best exemplified by the climate emergency, is an imminent threat to humanity. Replacing hydrocarbon-based energy generation with sustainable technologies, in a timeframe of a few decades, is a major challenge. Within this decade the need for fuel cells, batteries, photovoltaic cells and wind turbines will trigger a more than 100% increase in demand for many key metals. This demand cannot be met by increased recycling alone, thus increased metal production by mining is essential. However, high-grade metal deposits located at relatively shallow crustal levels are becoming more difficult to find while competition for metals is accelerating and the social acceptance of mining is deteriorating across the globe. In this talk I will outline some of the key challenges and potential solutions.

Sustainability - what next?

Our public lectures are free events that attract a diverse audience including the public, secondary school pupils and professionals. The series aims to open up areas of interest in the Earth and environmental sciences and present new research in this area to the public.

What do we want the world to look like in 2030, and how do we achieve this? In 2015, UN Member States agreed on the Sustainable Development Goals, a blueprint for tackling many of the challenges affecting communities around the world. Meeting these goals requires engagement, including by those involved in the Earth and environmental sciences. In this series, experts from a variety of disciplines examine the concept of ‘sustainable development and explore its implications on the use of diverse natural resources.
