An in-person event with Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellows at the School of Modern Languages, Dr Joanna Chojnicka and Dr Angela Tiziana Tarantini. The event is run by the Transnational Cultural & Visual Studies research theme at the School of Modern Languages.

Working from different perspectives, Dr Joanna Chojnicka and Dr Angela Tiziana Tarantini will analyse narrative and translation practices within and for vulnerable groups. Dr Chojnicka will explore the parallels between gender and linguistic ideologies whilst Dr Tarantini will scrutinize the performativity of translation practices aimed at the Deaf community. The talk will be divided into two parts.

Part 1: Dr Joanna Chojnicka
Dr Chojnicka will explore the idea that multilingualism unsettles the “one nation-one language” ideology the way the transgender umbrella unsettles the binary gender order, using case studies of multilingual and translation practices in gender transition narratives. Theorizing gender from the transgender perspective can be seen as a (postcolonial) project to describe the centre from the periphery. Similarly, theorizing approaches to language from the perspective of multilingualism and translation can demonstrate the constructedness and arbitrariness of orthodox linguistic categories, leading to a linguistics of relationships, connections, embodiments and extensions.

Biography: Dr Joanna Chojnicka obtained her PhD in Linguistics at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań in 2012 and has worked on projects in gender, sexuality and discourse studies as well as minority languages in Konstanz, Bremen and Poznań before coming to Cardiff in September 2021.

Part 2: Dr Angela Tiziana Tarantini
Dr Taranatini will explore the notion of performativity as an element and carrier of accessibility while drawing a clear distinction between “accessibility” and “access”. Focussing on sign language interpreted popular music, Tarantini will argue that when analysing translation in the performing arts the notion of performativity as intended in Translation Studies and that of performativity in Performance Studies should be combined. She will demonstrate that when translation in the performing arts is aimed at granting access to a ‘text’, the performative element of translation is the vector of accessibility. She will therefore theorize performativity as an area of research in Accessibility Studies.

Biography: Dr Angela Tiziana Tarantini obtained her PhD in Translation Studies at Monash University, where she carried out her research in theatre translation, and tutored numerous units in Translation and Interpreting Studies, Linguistics, and Italian Studies before joining Cardiff University.

Both Dr Joanna Chojnicka and Dr Angela Tiziana Tarantini are currently Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellows at the School of Modern Languages.
