Downward view of open book

An online reading group event organised by the History and Heritage research theme at the School of Modern Languages to discuss a chapter in the recently published volume ‘What is history, now?: how the past and present speak to each other.’ The conversation will be used as an opportunity to discuss our work in and about museums, and the future of the heritage sector.

We will be reading Gus Casely-Hayford, ‘How can museums open doors to the past?’ in Helen Carr and Suzannah Lipscomb, eds., What is history, now?: how the past and present speak to each other, London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2021.

This reading group will use Casely-Hayford’s chapter as a starting point for reflections on the changing character, role and societal value of museums. We will discuss how the opening of new frontiers in historical research is transforming the heritage sector, and how museums should deal with emerging challenges, such as the need to engage wider audiences and the increased importance of digital presence and engagement. We will also reflect on how our own research in the school might contribute to and shape such debates.

Digitised copies of the reading will be made available to Cardiff University staff and students who register for the online reading group. You may retain such copies after the end of the event, but strictly for your own personal use. No further copying, storage or distribution (including by email) is permitted without the consent of the copyright holder.
