A webinar with guest speaker Dr Bruce Bennett (Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts), run by the Transnational Cultural and Visual Studies research theme under the School-wide Responding to Crisis research theme at the School of Modern Languages.

Abstract
This paper will discuss the ways in which cinema has responded to the refugee crisis, identifying some of the most common devices employed by filmmakers in representing refugee experience and the political and historical background to the present situation in which millions have been forcibly displaced around the globe. The paper will mention a number of examples, including the UK TV series Exodus, and asks whether these diverse texts, that range from horror films to TV sitcoms and NGO documentaries, can be understood to constitute a 'fugitive aesthetics'.
