An online reading group event organised by the History and Heritage research theme at the School of Modern Languages to discuss a recently published chapter from the Transnational Modern Languages series. The conversation will be used as an opportunity to reflect on how transnational approaches shape our teaching and research.

We will be reading Benedict Schofield, ‘Who is German? Nineteenth-century Transnationalisms and the Construction of the Nation’ in Rebecca Braun and Benedict Schofield, eds., Transnational German Studies, Liverpool University Press, 2020.

Much of the teaching and research in the School of Modern Languages adopts a transnational approach; it underpins our undergraduate curriculum, and many of our researchers work on topics that are inherently transnational, such as translation, migration, and memory.

We will use Schofield’s chapter as a starting point to discuss the extent to which canonical authors and key figures in the contexts we study are shaped by the transnational. We will also address such questions as how we might think historically about the transnational, whether the transnational approach is truly transformative, and what a more decolonial approach to transnationalism may look like.
