If the UK is to tackle the intertwining climate and nature crises then the planning system must, as a matter of urgency, start playing a much more significant role. A critical component of the necessary change is to develop mechanisms for prioritising the delivery of environmental outcomes, as core objectives of planning, that set the parameters for development. This joint seminar organised by CPRE the countryside charity and Cardiff University provides a space for discussing ways in which we can place environmental goals at the heart of planning, and the ingredients required for them to be effective. It will cover environmental targets in planning, national planning policy, the new post-Brexit framework for environmental law and governance, and prospective reforms to environmental impact assessment.

Schedule:

Nicholas Grant, Landmark Chambers: ‘The implications of the Government’s Environmental Principles for the planning system and national planning policy’

Prof. Richard Cowell, Cardiff University: ‘Planning and the delivery of environmental targets’

Prof. Thomas Fischer, Liverpool University: ‘Can SEA and EIA be reformed? If so how?’
