Professor Anthony Pym

An online public lecture with Anthony Pym, Distinguished Professor of Translation and Intercultural Studies at the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, Spain; Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Melbourne, Australia; and Extra-ordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. The event is organised by the Transnational Cultural & Visual Studies research theme at the School of Modern Languages.

Abstract
Empirical research on the ways readers process translations is often disappointing. Despite the many heated debates within translation studies, different translation strategies can have little significant effect on the actual reading process and comprehension scores. When approached from the perspective of behavior-change communication, however, there is evidence of significant tipping points in the reception process where the reader’s trust is either lost or gained. Trust thus becomes the key factor for cooperative translational discourse. This talk will present the findings of several empirical reception studies that have been carried out in the past five years in areas ranging from foreign-affairs discourse to the reception of raw MT subtitles.
