Psychosis: Nature, Nurture and Neuroscience

Psychosis is a condition of the mind in which people have difficultly determining what is real and what is not. It usually manifests as delusions (false beliefs) or hallucinations (false perceptions).

Psychosis has many different causes and in its mildest forms is common in the general population.

It is also a feature of severe psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Research suggests that it results from the interplay of genetic and non-genetic risk factors and reflects subtle changes in the way in which the brain interprets information.
