Climate change and air pollution: Implications for urban mobility

The twin challenges of carbon emission reduction and air quality improvement must be solved urgently if our cities are to grow and ‘liveability’ improve. This debate will explore the future of urban mobility from this perspective and offer guidance to city planners for ways in which future transport and urban plans can contribute.

Speakers will contribute expertise in 4 subject areas

1. Definition of the scale of the problems and the implications on public health.
2. A survey of future transport and technological trends to understand the way in which carbon emissions and air quality issues will evolve.
3. A survey of urban and transport planning tools currently available to reduce pollution and congestion whilst maintain access to city services.
4. The experiences of two cities in their efforts to improve these key metrics, including conditions for success and dependencies. The ways in which access to our cities can be modified to make significant improvements in carbon emissions, NOX (nitrogen oxide) and particle pollution whilst improving the effective functioning of the social, retail, employment and business environments will be explored in detail.

Each speaker will take questions of clarification only, their contributions will be followed by a full scale moderated debate on the topics and issues raised by the individual presentations. This is a complex, topical and difficult subject which will be explored in a holistic and practical way to ensure relevance to urban and transport planners.
