The Revd Canon Gareth J Powell BA (CNAA), MA (Birmingham).

The Revd Gareth J Powell joined the Council and Court of Cardiff University on 1 August 2010. He was appointed as Vice-Chair of  Council in August 2016 until July 2019. He was  also a member of the Governance Committee and the Policy and Resources Committee, and Chair of the Remuneration Committee. He was appointed as Pro Chancellor of the University with effect from August 2019.

Mr Powell served as Secretary of the Methodist Conference from 2014-19, one of the three most senior roles in the British Methodist Church, having previously served as the Assistant Secretary. The Secretary of the Conference plays a principal part in the oversight and leadership of the Church, and in particular in the development and implementation of the Church’s vision of unity, mission, evangelism and worship and the strategic management of the Church’s affairs.  He is now a Farmington Fellow at Harris Manchester College, Oxford.

Mr Powell read theology at Westminster College, Oxford and then undertook ministerial training at The Queen’s College, Birmingham, obtaining an MA in Pastoral Theology before spending time at the Graduate School of Ecumenical Studies, the University of Geneva.

He served as Chaplain at Coventry University from 1997-99 and was Methodist Chaplain and Chaplaincy Coordinator at Cardiff University from 1999-2008.
