About
Driving discovery in the physical sciences to tackle the defining challenges of our time.
School mission
We are committed to advancing understanding of the physical and natural world as well as the wider cosmos through the integration of physics, astronomy, chemistry and the earth and environmental sciences.
By fostering an inclusive, collaborative community where students can reach their full potential and discovery connects with applied research, we are tackling key scientific challenges for the benefit of society and future generations.
School vision
By integrating the disciplines of physics, astronomy, chemistry and the earth and environmental sciences, we will make a significant contribution to humanity’s understanding of the universe, the materials that shape it, and the planet we inhabit.
With strengths in both fundamental discovery and technological innovation, our inclusive and rigorous research culture encourages collaboration across disciplinary boundaries to address global challenges; including climate change, energy systems, resource use, and environmental risk.
Our teaching ethos develops the next generation of physical scientists by encouraging curiosity, exploration and independence of thought. Our students graduate with confidence and knowledge, as well as a sense of civic responsibility to the planet and future generations.
