Dr Iwan Wyn Rees
Iwan's research interests encompass a number of interrelated linguistic fields, including:
- Geographical and social dialectology
- Phonetic / phonological variation and change (especially in transition zones)
- Welsh grammar (including regional varieties)
- The historical development of Welsh and its scholarship
Iwan joined the School of Welsh in 2012 when he was appointed a Research Associate on a project which examined the acquisition of Welsh as a second language in the Welsh for Adults sector. Previously, he was awarded an AHRC scholarship which allowed him to analyse various dialects of Welsh at Aberystwyth University. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2013 for a thesis which concentrates mainly on phonological variation in two adjoining areas in mid-Wales. His thesis seeks to combine the methods of traditional dialectology with the more recent approaches of sociolinguistics in order to determine the extent to which speakers from similar social backgrounds are linguistically homogeneous.
Iwan was recently awarded a scholarship by Santander which enabled him to conduct preliminary fieldwork in the Chubut province in southern Argentina on the contemporary usage of Welsh in the region. He has also been awarded a grant from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for another project which aims to familiarise actors and scriptwriters with the various dialects of Welsh.
