Live local learn local Tutor receives national award

We are proud to announce that Amina Shabaan has won the Inspire! Skills for Life Tutor ofthe Year Award 2012 to recognise her work in teaching Arabic language and culture in Cardiff.

The NIACE Dysgu Cymru Inspire! Skills for Life Tutor Awards arenational awards given to tutors/trainers from further education, higher education, the workplace or the community that are outstanding in their field and give over and above what is expected of them. And we can’t think of anyone more deserving than Amina.

Working for Cardiff University on the Live local learn local programme, Amina has an informal and fun approach to Arabic language, grammar and culture has built confidence and self-esteem amongst her students – many of which are from Cardiff’s Arabic community. She ensures that every student loves to come to class and thoroughly enjoys their learning experience and has demonstrated a strong commitment to her learners.

“If they didn’t have any knowledge of Arabic before and I see them reading, writing and having small conversations this gives me an amazing feeling. I cannot explain it but inside me I feel very happy!” said Amina.

Trish Owens, Live local learn local Co-odinator, said: “Amina is a wonderful tutor, much loved by her students. She is supportive, encouraging and inspirational”.

After finding out that she won the award, Amina said: “I have to communicate with my learners, make the class fun and make them happy and it means I’m always thinking about them, so I am more than happy that they were thinking about me!”
