Stuart Allan has joined the School as Professor of Journalism and Communication. He is a key figure in the field of journalism studies having published across range of research themes including the development of digital news, news coverage of war, conflict and crisis, and the relationships between professional and citizen journalists.
He will contribute to the School’s Postgraduate teaching while also playing a leading role in the School’s research environment.
Professor Stuart Allan said: “I am delighted to be joining what is one of the world’s leading Schools in journalism, media and cultural studies. It is impressive in so many ways, not least with regard to its commitment to aligning first class research and education with wider social issues in our globalising societies.
“JOMEC’s innovative blend of theory and professional practice makes it a truly exciting place to be. Currently much of my research is focusing on the forging of new relationships between professional and citizen journalists where the news coverage of war, conflict and crisis is concerned, with a particular interest in news images.”
Professor Allan will also supervise new PhD students and welcomes inquiries from future doctoral students. While supervision would typically follow the research areas noted above, human rights, media history, photojournalism, and young people’s civic engagement with digital media are also amongst Professor Allan’s areas of research interest.
Head of School, Professor Simon Cottle, said: “It's great news to be able to announce that Professor Stuart Allan has joined us in the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. He brings to the School a splendid set of research interests and an internationally renowned reputation as one of the world's leading authorities on digital news, citizen journalism and crisis communications.
“His work on environmental and science reporting as well as the history of photojournalism and war reporting also dovetail well with JOMEC's established research groups and teaching programmes.”
Prior to joining Cardiff University Professor Allan was Professor of Journalism at Bournemouth University, and before then Professor of Journalism and Media at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He can be found in room 1.26A and can be reached using AllanS@cardiff.ac.uk
