Success for PhD students at the School Healthcare Sciences

Two PhD students from the School of Healthcare Sciences have secured lectureships within the School; an impressive achievement. Catherine Dunn and Dominic Roche are excited about the opportunity to continue in the School and tell us a little bit about their experiences as PhD students at Cardiff University.

Our Images of Research Celebratory event took place on Thursday 12 December 2013, and was a massive success. Around 200 attendees enjoyed drinks, canapes and music while viewing the wonderful exhibition of images submitted by researchers across the University. We would like to thank everyone who took part or attended.

Flying the flag for Cardiff University

Luke Piggott who completed his PhD earlier this year and is now a member of staff in the School of Biosciences and the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute has been selected to represent the University in the World University Winter Games, place in Trentino, Italy.

Beatrice Berthon, PhD student in Medical Physics, School of Medicine, recently returned from a 21 day research trip to the USA where she visited Emory University’s Radiation Oncology Department, Velocity Medical Solutions and attended ASTRO’s 55th Annual Meeting in Atlanta, before visiting George Sgouros RTD Lab at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, the Wisconsin Institute for Medical Research and the Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York.

Over 4,000 Postgraduates welcomed to Cardiff University

This autumn, Cardiff University welcomed over 4,000 new postgraduate students with a range of events during our Welcome Fortnight, including the University Welcome to Postgraduates by our Vice-Chanceller, Postgraduate Meet & Mingles, Pizza & Quiz nights, Film Nights, a Cardiff Bay cruise, and a Friday Night Dinner.

At the University-wide induction event for postgraduate research students, Starting Out, our new research students were given important information and advice to set them on their way, and lots of opportunities to make new friends and network both during structured activities and over lunch or at a cheese and wine evening reception. Talks covered topics such as the supervisory relationship, planning your skills development training and starting and enjoying your PhD.

University Graduate College moving into new building
