Leaders in research
As a member of the Russell Group of leading research universities we have world-class research staff that are making a real difference in the world.
We were ranked 5th amongst UK universities for research quality and 2nd for impact in the most recent Research Excellence Framework. Notably, 15 out of 27 of our academic disciplines were rated in the top 10 on quality. Such research annually earns Cardiff University grants and investments totalling many tens of millions of pounds and also attracts top researchers from around the world.
Our undergraduate students are able to study in a vibrant, research-intensive environment and interact with leading scholars in their field. Our research embraces all aspects of the human and natural world.
As research is undertaken throughout the University, this creates a stimulating environment for study. It encourages critical thinking and highlights the provisional nature of knowledge. It also encompasses the acquisition of high levels of subject specific and generic skills and nurtures both self-reliance and teamwork, all valued attributes.
Our research culture impacts progressively on our students. In the early stages, students are given a flavour of the research activities in their subject. As they progress, they participate increasingly in learning activities which are influenced by staff research and scholarship. For example, optional modules may be offered in areas of particular staff research interest and case studies or experiments used in class may derive from live research projects.
Learning activities may be offered which develop and test the techniques and skills of research and scholarship at a level appropriate to undergraduate work, such as, through project or dissertation work.
