Routes into Languages Cymru is a pan-Wales project that aims to increase the visibility and uptake of languages in schools in Wales.

This project is funded by Welsh universities, the four regional education consortia and the British Council Wales. There are two operational hubs, one here in Cardiff University and the other in Bangor University. We coordinate a number of events and activities for learners from year 7-13, and increasingly with primary schools in Wales.

Our menu of activities is free for Local Education Authority (LEA) maintained schools in Wales.

Routes Cymru Student Language Ambassadors

Routes Cymru Student Ambassadors support outreach events and offer a variety of activities, including school talks and language taster sessions.  Our ambassadors are current students in Welsh universities and colleges who are studying a range of courses along with languages.  All our ambassadors are trained to deliver sessions for schools.

Pupil Language Ambassadors (Secondary) / International Languages Superheroes (Primary)

We train pupils from years 7 to 9 in secondary schools and year 5 in primary schools to become Language Ambassadors.

In partnership with Routes Cymru and their languages department, they organise events and activities to increase the visibility of languages and to champion the benefits of bilingualism and multilingualism in their schools.

For more information about this activity, please visit our website.

Primary Toolkit

To support primary teachers with the delivery of international languages as part of the New Curriculum for Wales, we’re currently developing a ‘Primary Toolkit’ and will provide teachers with resources and a pedagogical guide to support the teaching and learning of languages in the primary sector.  The toolkit will be available on the Routes Cymru website in the autumn term of 2021. For further information contact info@routesintolanguagescymru.co.uk

AS/A level masterclasses

We organise AS/A Level Masterclasses on a selection of films, novels and cultural themes of the WJEC specification in French, Spanish and German.

We publish the dates of our masterclasses on the events page of our website.

Routes Cymru Governors Toolkit

Routes Cymru has created a toolkit to support secondary school governors and school leaders to assess the ‘health’ of languages in schools, and to provide examples of best practices, enabling them to advocate for and to support languages provision. The toolkit can be downloaded from the governor's page on our website.
