Cardiff is easy to get around, safe, cheap, and has great nightlife. The School of Engineering is well organised, and the staff that work there are helpful and considerate. I was lucky enough to get a UK Power Academy Scholarship through my course, which is well worth applying for in your first year. You can do placements with loads of different companies - I did mine with Siemens. It was a brilliant experience that developed my communication and teamwork skills.

Our student spaces
Located in Queen's BuildingsOur student spaces at Queen’s Buildings and Trevithick are perfect for studying, group learning and socialising. The Trevithick Library provides IT facilities and information resources for all of our engineering students.
Mechanical and manufacturing laboratories
Located in Queen's BuildingsOur mechanical and medical engineers can use our labs to gain practical skills in testing and diagnostics, and they can access a wide range of 3D printing technologies.
Electrical power system simulator
Located in Queen's BuildingsOur electrical and electronic engineering students can use our labs to get a real feel for working on a power grid, including setting up, running and testing simulations of a power system.
High voltage laboratory
Located in Queen's BuildingsOur electrical and electronic engineers can use our extensive facilities to improve their understanding of high voltage systems and phenomena, from the National Grid to alternative insulation gases to lightning strikes on aircraft.
Civil engineering laboratories
Located in Queen's BuildingsOur civil, environmental and architectural engineers can use our labs to gain practical experiences in water-based designs, such as pipes, and understand and test concrete and its properties.
Cardiff Racing paddock
Located in Queen's BuildingsWe provide support, facilities, and ample space for the Cardiff Racing team to build, design and work on racing cars for the Formula Student event.
Centre for Student Life
Our School is a short walk away from the new home for our Students' Union, student support services and a large selection of shops, restaurants and study spaces.
Queen's Buildings
We are based right in the heart of the city with easy access to the town centre, main transport hubs, the rest of the University, student halls of residence and the Students' Union.
The practical components really helped me to get a lot from my course. Every year we went on a field trip to a different location in the UK where we got a practical hands-on experience of what the industry offers. We got to survey different buildings and see how they are structurally put together. It was also a good chance to get to know your lecturers, so you feel more comfortable asking them questions later in the course. And you get to meet more of your coursemates and make friends.

First year explained
Find out what to expect from year one as an engineering student.
I did a placement at Airbus. It was a fantastic opportunity, and I got to work with world-renowned products. My placement allowed me to get hands-on engineering experience, and I was able to decide what I wanted to do after finishing the course. I also spent time studying abroad at the University of Miami. I got to make some international friends, study in a terrific location, and have an incredible experience.
