2020 entry grades and appeals

Advice and information for undergraduate students about changes to their exam results.

We understand how challenging this year's admissions process has been and want to offer support as you take your next steps. We'll keep this page updated as any new information is available.

Revised grades

We welcome the announcement by the Welsh and UK Governments that A level, AS, GCSE, Skills Challenge Certificate and Welsh Baccalaureate grades in Wales and England will now be awarded on the basis of Centre Assessment Grades (School or College assessment grades).

If you are impacted by this, we will honour the offer of a place in 2020, or 2021 for those who applied for deferred entry, to all applicants who:

  • selected us as your firm choice, or
  • selected us as your insurance choice (if you have not met the terms of your firm choice offer and have not been accepted by your firm choice university).

Your amended grades must meet the conditions of your offer by the following deadlines:

  • 7 September 2020 – for all programmes except those listed below.
  • 31 August 2020 – for programmes in our Schools of Architecture, Dentistry, Healthcare Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy for 2020 entry. After this date and up until 7 September, we will still honour a place but it may be for 2021 entry.

Update - 20 August 2020: We expect to receive the revised centre assessment grades for A level and Welsh Baccalaureate applicants from UCAS by Friday 21 August.

If you have received official confirmation of your centre assessment grades and would like to enquire about your original firm or insurance place with us, please email admissions@cardiff.ac.uk with your name and UCAS ID, using the subject line “Revised grades”.

Following a review of the revised results, we will begin contacting applicants who have confirmed they wish to be reconsidered for a place from Monday 24 August. We appreciate that this is an anxious time and are putting everything possible in place to process all decisions as quickly as possible.

Accommodation for applicants affected by grade changes

Firm and Insurance applicants coming here on the basis of Centre Assessment Grades are guaranteed a place in University accommodation if they meet the following application deadlines:

  • Firm applicants - you must have submitted your online residences application by Monday 27 July 2020 at 09:00
  • Insurance applicants - you must submit your online residences application by Monday 31 August 2020

All applicants must then:

  • accept your unconditional offer to study by Monday 31 August 2020
  • accept your offer of residence within five days of your room being allocated.

Applicants appealing exam results

We will honour an offer for a place in 2020, or 2021 for those who applied for deferred entry, to all applicants who:

  • selected us as your firm choice, or
  • selected us as your insurance choice (if you have not met the terms of your firm choice offer and have not been accepted by your firm choice university).

You must meet the conditions of your offer by the following deadlines:

  • 7 September 2020 - for all programmes except Schools of Architecture, Dentistry, Healthcare Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy.
  • 31 August 2020 - for programmes in our Schools of Architecture, Dentistry, Healthcare Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy. Up until 7 September, we will still honour a place for those who receive revised grade(s). Whether the place is for 2020 or 2021 entry will depend upon availability of spaces on the programme.

After 7 September, if your appeal is successful, please contact our Admissions Team admissions@cardiff.ac.uk so that we can advise you.
