This module introduces students to the concepts of medicine optimisation framed around the management of patients at the extremes of life and multi-morbidities. The therapeutic topics include cardiovascular risk, thromboembolic disease, pain, principles of antimicrobial stewardship, paediatric care, care of frail patients, dementia and palliative care. Students will explore the importance of history taking, differential diagnosis and management of a variety of case studies where they will address issues related to frailty, polypharmacy, adherence, health beliefs adverse drug reactions, drug interactions and deprescribing. This will require a consideration of preventative measures, lifestyle advice, brief interventions, the interaction of health and social care and the provision of integrated care. Students will apply knowledge of therapeutics, drug monitoring, interpretation of blood tests and the concept of risk.

Applications for September intake, normally close in the middle of July but may close sooner if all places are filled. We usually allocate places on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend you apply as early as possible.
International applications
Distance learning modules do not require travel to the UK.
English Language
A copy of your IELTS certificate or an equivalent English language qualification, in line with the professional requirements of the GPhC. The GPhC states an IELTS overall score of at least 7, with no score less than 7 in each of the four areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking at one sitting of the test. If the test was completed more than 2 years ago, you may be required to provide current evidence of your English language ability.
Please include the date of your expected test if this qualification is pending. If you have alternative acceptable evidence, such as an undergraduate degree studied in the UK, please supply this in place of an IELTS.

- degree in a health-related discipline e.g. pharmacy
- relevant professional experience evidenced for example by references, portfolio of evidence and/or professional registration

Module assessment
The module is assessed through an assignment (patient management problems); it is designed to illustrate that the student ‘knows how’ to manage certain situations within practice (all learning outcomes).
Formative assessment will be through multi-choice questions on therapeutics after study days and completion of directed reading/activities. Each student will present a case study to a small group of their peers and receive feedback.
THE OPPORTUNITY FOR REASSESSMENT IN THIS MODULE:
All assessments must be passed with a minimum mark of 50%. Opportunities to retrieve any failure in assessments will be in line with University and School regulatory guidance. In the event of failure in an assessment, the student will be required to submit a new assignment.
