Pain Management Standalone Modules

These online modules provide Continuing Professional Development (CPD) education for healthcare professionals who want to specialise in the field of pain management. They are also aimed at educationalists, to provide the appropriate knowledge and expertise on pain, to teach others from various disciplines.

All modules can be studied individually to contribute to your continuing professional development portfolio and as part of the MSc Pain Management. We also offer modules in Primary Care Pain Management.

Each standalone 20 credit Level 7 module runs once per academic year and is delivered entirely online via distance-learning. There are a variety of formative and summative assessment methods used, such as: written assignments, wiki development, blogs, MCQs, online group work, development of guidelines, and PowerPoint presentations.

On this module you will study various pain producing conditions, using patient case studies.


9 September - 18 November 2019

This module will provide you with increased knowledge of the research process, evidence based practice and statistics, to enable you to critically evaluate, synthesise and reflect on research evidence, to practice.

16 September - 9 December 2019

The aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge and skills that will enable youto select suitable clinical management options for different types of pain and different clinical environments. The evidence-base and analytical approaches enabling such choices will be explored and the student will have the opportunity to relate these to a specific professional context. The module will also help you gain an appreciation of inter-professional roles and the needs of different patient groups within pain management.


18 November 2019 -10 February 2020

This module aims to provide the student with an appreciation of the Biopsychosocial principles involved in the experience of pain.


9 December - 9 March 2020

Studying this module will give you the knowledge and skills to critically explore the concept of ‘professionalism’ and ways in which professional practice issues affect patient management, health care professional decision making and management options. Different theoretical perspectives and professional issue models will be discussed in terms of their strengths and weaknesses in supporting clinical practice.

Inter-professional healthcare team roles and team working are considered in relation to professional issues and how these can impact on pain management practice. The emphasis is on how to use evidence base approaches to inform management and practice in relation to Professional Issues in Pain Management.


17 February - 20 April 2020

This module will provide you with an evidence-based understanding of pharmacological and management strategies (including pharmacology), commonly used to manage acute and chronic non-malignant.

16 March - 25 May 2020

Entry requirements

In addition to satisfying the University’s minimum entry requirements, including English language requirements, applicants must:

  • hold a qualification in a relevant clinical subject
  • be currently working in a relevant clinical area with at least two years’ experience in the field.

We reserve the right to cancel the delivery of a standalone module. This could happen if a course is under-subscribed or if there is a change in circumstances. This is due to the fact that some modules have minimum student numbers required before they can run. This is to ensure that an appropriate quality of education can be delivered. When this happens we will issue a full or partial refund depending on whether any classes took place.
