Numerical modelling of wind-wave-current-sediment interaction

This research project is in competition for funding with one or more projects available across the EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). Usually the projects which receive the best applicants will be awarded the funding. Find out more information about the DTP and how to apply.

Start date: 1 October 2019

The main aim of the proposed project is to quantify the sediment transport and morphodynamics subjected to various ambient environments.

Numerical simulations will be carried out and compared with experimental measurements, to reveal great details of sediment transport processes under the effect of the combined wind, wave and tide conditions.

Project aims and methods

The specific objectives of the project are to address the challenges of the highly complex interactive nearshore processes including:

  1. to refine and validate computational fluid dynamics code to perform the complex wind-wave-current interaction
  2. to simulate the sediment transport and bed evolution under the combined wind, wave and current effects.

The research results will be significant to gain further insights into better quantifying the morphodynamics in the area for both academic research and engineering practice. The proposed work is adequate for a PhD student to undertake with 3.5 years.

The technologies and new knowledge developed from this research are to be disseminated in a timely way to the end users and coastal engineering community and beyond through attending international conferences and relevant workshops and meetings. The research results are also to be published in internationally leading journals.

The supervisory team has extensive experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and sediment transport and a proven track record in all key elements of the project. The main supervisor and joint main supervisor have published over 30 and 50 journal papers respectively on developing, testing and applying advanced CFD methods for engineering applications.
