Why study with us

Critical rigour, creative thinking and intellectual inquisitiveness are at the heart of our teaching and research. We explore fresh perspectives in the study of language, texts, cultures, ideas, values and identities in English literature, language and linguistics. I studied philosophy as an undergraduate student and always enjoyed the teaching style and the subjects we discussed. I knew when I completed my degree that I wasn’t ready to leave Cardiff and the amazing philosophy tutors there. The Philosophy MA is the best thing I’ve done.

Cardiff Book Talk

We are committed to sharing the relevance of our research by bringing together academics, students and the local community. Our book group with a difference sparks a lively exchange between a community audience and academics who offer thought-provoking perspectives on chosen texts.

Philosophical edge

Embedded in a thriving and supportive research community with its postgraduate work-in-progress seminars, year-round reading groups, workshops and conferences, Philosophy postgraduates participate in the thought-provoking Royal Institute of Philosophy visiting speaker programme and an annual conference.

The MA in English Literature at Cardiff was a great preparation for PhD study. The  weekly Research Methods workshops and the MA  Dissertation helped me to hone my critical voice. Similarly, the vast array of modules on offer introduced me to everything from the first poem written in English to a novel published in 2001. So,  I’d recommend the MA to  anyone!

Centrally located

Study in the heart of our leafy city centre campus at the John Percival Building, with easy access to the University’s magnificent Special Collections and Archives in the adjacent Arts and Social Sciences Library.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking the MA Language and Communication Research, due to its extensive focus on both quantitative and qualitative research design, and also the flexibility it allowed when choosing a topic for my MA Dissertation. I was able to explore topics of particular interest to me, while also learning highly valuable research skills. I believe that through acquiring the knowledge and skills taught within the MA, I was afforded a concrete foundation from which to smoothly transition to doctoral research.
