Our School

The School is located in the University Dental Hospital on our Heath Park campus, a site shared with the University Hospital of Wales, the third largest university hospital in the UK. The School benefits from being located next to 100 acres of parkland and playing fields and being a walkable two-mile distance to the city centre.

Despite being based in a large hospital, our School has a close-knit community with a postgraduate population of about 50 registered students. We have a dedicated postgraduate study suite available for all our students to enjoy. We also have a dedicated postgraduate team that support you and make sure you feel at home from day one.

I found the course truly enjoyable due to the welcoming nature of the supervisors and staff at the hospital. This made the work environment an exceptional experience on both a personal and professional level. The amazing amount of patient experience truly makes this programme one of the best.

State-of-the-art dental clinics are available throughout our School which facilitate chair-side teaching in a professional and caring environment. Our clinical laboratories feature the latest CAD-CAM technology and three-dimensional printing facilities for intra-oral prostheses. A £2.2M refurbishment of our pre-clinical (phantom head) teaching facilities has also been recently completed.



Not only are we based in the capital city of Wales, the University Dental Hospital and School building is situated on the largest healthcare campus in the country, so you'll be training in a holistic clinical environment from the outset of your course.

100% of our submitted research rated at least of international standard and we are ranked 1st in its Unit of Assessment in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Situated in the University Dental Hospital, where there are approximately 100,000 patient contacts per year – 75% of them directly related to clinical training of students.

The top floors of the Dental Hospital and School house our dedicated research laboratories, which provide access to all of the materials and equipment necessary to conduct internationally competitive biological, clinical and translational research.

Studying Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine MSc

Our students discuss what it's like studying Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the only dental School in Wales. The MSc combines both taught modules and a 5-month research project which can be chosen by you.

Studying Oral Biology MSc

Our postgraduate taught programmes are delivered by internationally recognised clinicians and research academics who provide a friendly, supportive and professional environment for both clinical and biomedical science focused study programmes.


Our clinical courses can provide eligibility to sit relevant national clinical specialist examinations:

Develop your advanced clinical skills in our state-of-the-art facilities

Clinical Dentistry (Endodontology) (MClinDent) (full time) (3 years)

Designed to aid in developing evidence based practice and develop advanced clinical skills to enable you to become a mono-specialist in Endodontology.

Methods used throughout include self-directed learning and presentation in small groups to encourage a problem-based learning.

Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics) (MClinDent) (full time) (3 years)

Designed to aid in developing evidence based practice and develop advanced clinical skills to enable you to become a mono-specialist in fixed and removable Prosthodontics.

You’ll benefit from practical clinical experience by having direct management of patients

Implantology (MSc) (full time) (1 year)

This course is an academic and clinical programme leading to the award of an MSc in Implantology. In this programme, students treat patients provided for them under expert supervision. Students have the opportunity to participate in the full spectrum of contemporary implant practice where all forms of bone and soft-tissue grafting are undertaken.

Opportunities to receive further training in nearby district hospitals in south Wales.

Orthodontics (MScD) (full time) (3 years)

You will gain the skills needed to perform as a competent specialist in Orthodontics, with focus on the clinical, theoretical and research areas required for provision of appropriate patient care.


Non-clinical courses are designed to provide the basic research training often now expected for entering into a PhD programme of study and may be used to permit entry into a three-year PhD programme of study within the School of Dentistry:

Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (MSc) (full time) (1 year)

The Programme provides in-depth training in this branch of biomedical science, including stem cell biology, biomaterials and tissue/organ engineering.

This MSc aims to provide detailed academic insight into understanding the structure and biology of oral tissues and dental diseases.

MSc Implantology of Cardiff University offers advanced knowledge of surgical and restorative Implantology in a friendly and well-equipped environment. It is an experience of a lifetime, that I totally recommend to every dentist!

Our research has significant focus on the involvement of microbial biofilms in a wide range of human infections.


Advanced Therapies Group

The work of the group is focused on polymer therapies derived from nature in applied research.


Matrix Biology and Tissue Repair

Our research aims to understand and manipulate the interface between extracellular matrix (ECM) and the diversity of cells in the craniofacial complex.


Regenerative Biology Group

Our research aims to enhance understanding of the cellular and molecular regulating the repair and regenration of oral, dental, dermal and neural tissues, during health and disease - delivering strong translational knowledge for patient benefit.

Public health

Dental Public Health Unit

Our research focuses on oral health improvement and ranges from clinical trials of preventive dental technologies to studies designed to further understanding of and actions to address oral health inequalities.


Orthodontics and Three-Dimensional Imaging Group

Research improves our knowledge and understanding of the development of the craniofacial complex and translates this knowledge into routine clinical practice and daily activities.


Violence Research Group

The Violence Research Group has helped bring about practical action to reduce violence at a global level.

Because we are based in a working hospital, you are instantly surrounded by both public, professionals and researchers. Our progressive healthcare education is integrated with patient care and advanced research facilities, all based in our major teaching and research centre. The academic and clinical staff within the School are recognised as being experts in their field, providing valuable clinical services to the people of Wales in addition to their academic responsibilities.

After finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry in Spain, I was looking for a more specific and challenging field. I got interested in the development of tissues by 3D bioprinting and so I chose to focus on this. The facilities were incredibly good, and I found all the staff really helpful and always open to questions and new ideas. I would totally recommend this course to any person with a high interest in research and willing to focus their future career in a developing field as it will offer many opportunities.
