Water Informatics: Science and Engineering

Our School of Engineering is a partner in a major EPSRC funded Centre for Doctoral Training in Water Informatics: Science and Engineering (WISE CDT).

The project, with a total value in excess of £5.6 million, will be led by the University of Exeter and undertaken in partnership with the other GW4 universities of Cardiff, Bath, and Bristol. The new Centre for Doctoral Training will be offered across all four campuses.

The Centre will work closely with industrial and international academic partners to offer an advanced PhD training experience for postgraduate students, designed to supply the UK with its next generation of water scientists and engineers.

Within Cardiff the project will be undertaken in close collaboration with the School of Computer Science and Informatics and the School of Geography and Planning.

The main aim of the WISE CDT will be to meet the growing need for training a new breed of engineers and scientists (Hydroinformaticians) who are capable of working at the interface of traditionally separate informatics, science and engineering disciplines, in order to manage the water cycle effectively and sustainably.

Building on existing excellence in research, education and scholarship across the four partner institutions, and across the Schools at Cardiff University, the WISE CDT will recruit and train at least 90 highly qualified postgraduate students in various areas of Hydroinformatics, catering for a diverse set of career aspirations and industry identified knowledge gaps.

The students will participate in an annual summer school, a water hackathon, and will spend three months either with one of the many leading companies associated with the project (such as CH2M HILL, Arup, and IBM) or on sabbatical at one of the many leading international universities linked to the project, such as MIT (US), EPFL (Switzerland) and the National University of Singapore.

The Cardiff University team will offer projects in topics relating to:

  • Physical Hydrology
  • Hydro-Environmental Modelling
  • Coastal and Estuarine Engineering
  • Water Quality and Treatment Engineering
  • Distributed and Cloud Computing
  • Informatics
  • Visual Computing
  • Environmental Law.
