New Welsh Government Bursaries for Master's Students

The Welsh Government has announced funding for a bursary scheme to attract Welsh and EU students to study their master’s degrees in Wales.

Bursaries for STEMM students

The Welsh Government's bursary for postgraduates aims to increase the number of Welsh graduates who remain in or return to Wales to undertake a master’s degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or medicine, also known as 'STEMM' subjects.

Each bursary is worth £2,000 and is available to Welsh and EU students studying a full taught master's degree programme starting in September 2019 at Cardiff University.

Bursaries for students aged 60 and above

The Welsh Government has announced funding for a new bursary scheme to attract Welsh and EU students aged 60 and above to do their master’s degree in Wales.

Each bursary is worth £4,000. This bursary is available to Welsh and EU domiciled students aged 60 or over, who are studying a full taught master's degree programme starting in September 2019 at Cardiff University.

Bursaries for students studying through the medium of Welsh

A bursary is also available from the Welsh Government for all Welsh and EU students to complete their master’s degree through the medium of Welsh. Each bursary is worth £1,000.

Additional funding package for Welsh and EU students

This funding announced is in addition to the new funding package announced in March of up to £17,000 towards master's studies and living costs for Welsh and EU students, the most generous student finance package in the UK.

Statistics published earlier this year showed a 58% increase in the number of postgraduates applying for student support in Wales.

Further details on these new bursaries will be published on this page and emailed to current applicants as soon as it has been confirmed.
