Sustainable Transport Research Network

Research and engagement on new and emerging transport technologies and modes, including electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and mobility as a service.

We carry out research and engagement activities on new and emerging transport technologies and modes, including electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and mobility as a service.

We cover all modes of transport including automotive, aerospace, rail, shipping, cycling and walking amongst others focussing on a ‘Whole System Approach’.

Mobility brings a range of societal and economic benefits, from access to services and employment, to economic development and cultural exchange. But current transport systems also suffer from a number of intractable problems, including congestion, emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and local air pollutants, noise, accidents, depletion of resources, social exclusion and inaccessibility of amenities and services.

At the same time, several mega trends – including urbanisation, ageing population, electrification, increasing connectivity, and automation – are likely to impact on mobility systems. These and other developments will see disruptive innovations and socio-technical transitions within mobility systems that will have profound impacts on society, economy and environment.

The focus of our network is on new and emerging transport technologies and modes, including electric vehicles (EVs), alternative fuels, autonomous vehicles (AVs), infrastructure and mobility as a service (MAAS, eg car sharing). The impacts of these innovations may include the following:

  • environmental - change in GHGs from EV/AV dominated transport systems
  • technological - impact on the grid, dynamic charging of EVs, V2G
  • legal - risk and regulation of AVs
  • organisational - new business models for MAAS
  • societal - cultural norms around car/bike sharing
  • psychological - interaction with and trust in AVs
  • computational - using traffic simulation and use of abstractions, such as agent-based approaches
  • ethical - AV decision-making.

Aims

  • to understand the nature and impacts of new and emerging transport technologies and modes (eg electric and autonomous vehicles; alternative fuels, infrastructure, mobility as a service) by generating robust evidence and high-quality scientific insights
  • to disseminate and apply this understanding to real-world contexts, including policy, industry and civil society, in order to help generate innovative solutions for transport systems
  • to build capacity within Cardiff University across a range of disciplines and create diverse collaborations with stakeholders through networking and knowledge sharing events.

We conduct research on:

  • autonomous vehicles
  • electric vehicles
  • alternative fuels
  • smart grids
  • vehicle to grid
  • car sharing
  • infrastructure
  • transport modal choice
  • in-vehicle human machine interface design
  • vehicle simulation.
  • transport logistics
  • transport policy
  • circular economy.
