Architectural Science Group
The Architectural Science Group undertakes interdisciplinary research on sustainability and the sustainable management of the built environment.
For over 25 years, we have undertaken interdisciplinary research on sustainability and the sustainable management of the built environment, from individual components, through whole buildings, to community urban and city scales.
The group seeks to encourage individual and interdisciplinary team based research, with clear agenda setting and high impact on current issues in architecture and in response to the needs of government, industry and society. Much of the group’s research is closely linked with international and national targets for carbon reduction, however our research interests encompass all aspects of sustainability in the built environment and efforts to improve quality of life.
The ASG has an international reputation, with extensive overseas collaborative links and research projects. It aims to achieve international excellence and outstanding quality of outputs from its research activities and to continue to develop research led teaching.
The ASG is a multi-disciplinary group including building physicists, environmental scientists, engineers, architects and social scientists who carry out research in the field of sustainability, environmental design and energy use in the built environment.
The work of the Architectural Science Group is organised around four special interest groups:
- Low Carbon Energy and Urban Transitions – undertakes innovative interdisciplinary research on past, present and prospective socio-technical transitions, drawing upon and developing historical and case study analysis, conceptual modelling and scenario foresight tools and methodologies (coordinator Phil Jones)
- Modelling and Simulation – undertakes research, development and application of computer models to buildings and cities, including tools for designers and policymakers (coordinator Simon Lannon & Phil Jones)
- Building Performance Evaluation – undertakes monitoring of energy and environment performance of buildings and wider concerns of post occupancy evaluation (coordinator Chris Tweed)
- People and the Built Environment – undertakes investigations of the usability of buildings, health and well-being in the built environment (coordinator Wouter Poortinga)
The Architectural Science Group welcomes enquiries from anyone interested in applying to study for an MPhil or PhD degree in areas relating to the interests of the group.
