Thinking about teaching: reflections on education

The course will provide participants, particularly those considering teaching as career or undertaking a PGCE, a structured way to reflect on what are high quality teaching and learning experiences and what makes a ‘good’ teacher.

Who it’s for

This is primarily designed as an introductory course for those considering a career in teaching.

The course may also be considered for those with a teaching or training element to their job role.

What you’ll learn

This course takes you through the process of reflecting on what are high quality teaching and learning experiences and what makes a ‘good’ teacher. Broad topics include:

  • Why reflection is important
  • Creating the right culture, climate and ethos
  • Thinking about inclusive pedagogy
  • Thinking about design for learning
  • The importance of assessment to support learning
  • Thinking about delivery and the importance of learning interactions.

Topics covered

Following the introductory week of the programme which will prepare the participants for the course, the course will consist seven one-week sessions, namely:

  • Week 1 - Preparation for learning
  • Week 2 - Topic 1 - Introduction to reflection
  • Week 3 - Topic 1 - Applying models, assessing in the quality of reflective writing
  • Week 4 - Topic 2 - Culture, climate and ethos
  • Week 5 - Topic 2 - Inclusive pedagogy
  • Week 6 - Topic 3 - Key debates 1) Design for learning
  • Week 7 - Topic 3 - Key debates 2) Assessment
  • Week 8 - Topic 3 - Key debates 3) Delivery and learning interactions.

Teaching and useful information

  • Each session will consist of approximate 3 hrs of core learning per week and will include asynchronous content through pre-recorded/prepared materials and activities and reading, and interactive live teaching
  • Live teaching every week for an hour in weeks 2-8 (taught in the evening to maximise flexibility and participation)
  • We will confirm timings, provide learning materials, and other information (such as login details) in the two weeks leading up to your course. The learning materials will be issued via cloud file storage and will be available to access during the course (please note that the materials are not available for download)
  • You will not need any equipment except for a computer with good internet connection and a camera function, and the ability to sign into Zoom.
