Schools

Bees Header

A small grant from the Wellcome Trust enabled us to initiate a pilot project with nine Cardiff schools.

We provided each school with either a bee hive or a bug house, age appropriate teaching materials aligned to the key stages of the national curriculum and bee friendly plants.

These tools will help the schools, which cover a range of age groups and diverse backgrounds to integrate bees and biodiversity into their teaching; thereby inspiring the next generation of scientists and encouraging the students and their parents to transform their neighbourhoods into more bee friendly places.

With further support, this approach could easily be extended to the rest of Cardiff and ultimately across the whole country.

Further education

We have also worked closely with Coleg y Cymoedd and have installed bee hives at their campuses at Nantgarw and Ystrad Mynach. In addition to working with the students to enrich the biodiversity of each campus, we have also used this project to create STEM-related learning opportunities such as student visits to the University to learn more about the science underpinning this work.

Through these activities we are also encouraging students to consider a career in a STEM based subject, to widen access to higher education and to increase the numbers of students from state schools in Wales studying at Cardiff University.
