Professor David Rickard

Professor Emeritus

School of Earth and Ocean Sciences

I trained in geology, chemistry and microbiology at Imperial College, London where I was an early pioneer in the field of geomicrobiology. I was a research professor in ore geology and geochemistry with the Swedish Natural Science Foundation and worked in the USA, Australia and France.

I was appointed to the established Chair in Mining Geology at the University of Wales and chaired the Department of Earth Sciences at Cardiff University (1993-2002).

I am currently Emeritus Professor of Geochemistry at Cardiff University and adjunct Professor of Marine Geochemistry at the University of Delaware.

I have over 300 publications including over 150 reviewed papers in scientific journals on sulfide chemistry, geochemistry, geomicrobiology, biogeochemistry and ore geology.

I was an Editor of Economic Geology 1975-1980, Chief Editor of Mineralium Deposita 1982-2000 and Chemical Geology 2004-2010.

My latest book is a research monograph on Sulfidic Sediments and Sedimentary Rocks (Elsevier 121212, 801pp).

I have received numerous honours for my contributions to chemistry, microbiology and geology including elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, Royal Society of Chemistry, the Society of Biology, the Geological Society of London, the Geochemical Society, the European Society of Geochemistry and the Society of Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits.
